What we like

  • Multi-track editor with captions, transitions, zoom and pan, quizzes and SCORM export
  • Records screen, webcam, microphone and system audio on separate tracks, up to 4K
  • The free Editor has no time limit and no cap on recording length

What to watch

  • Free exports carry a watermark, and so do exports on the $39 Starter plan
  • Sold yearly only, with no monthly option
  • No share link straight after recording; you produce the video first

Best for: You make tutorials or training videos and want to record and edit them in one desktop app.

Our verdict

Camtasia is a recorder built around a real video editor. It records the screen, webcam, microphone and system audio on separate tracks, then gives you a multi-track timeline with captions, callouts, zoom and pan, transitions and quizzes. If you make training videos or software tutorials that need editing, it covers the whole job in one app on Windows or Mac.

You can use the full Editor for free with no time limit, but every export carries a watermark. Removing it takes the Essentials plan at $179.88 a year, and there’s no monthly option. The $39 Starter plan includes Snagit but still watermarks Editor exports.

It’s slow for quick messages: you produce the video before you get a link. If you mostly send short video updates, compare it with Loom. For Mac demos with automatic zooms, see Screen Studio. For screenshots and short clips, Snagit costs $39 a year.
