Our verdict

Greenshot is a free, open-source screenshot tool for Windows. It captures a region, a window or the full screen, opens the result in a simple image editor, and sends it to a file, the clipboard, email, Office apps, photo sites or Jira. Reviewers on G2 and Capterra rate it highly for ease of use.

It doesn’t record video. That’s why it scores low on our recording and editing criteria, which are about video. The Mac version is a separate $1.99 app that hasn’t been updated since 2020.

If you also want screen recording on Windows for free, ShareX does both. On a Mac, look at CleanShot X. If you need screenshots and video on both systems, Snagit is a paid option.
