Our verdict
The Screenshot app is the quickest way to record a Mac screen. Press Shift-Command-5, pick the full screen, a window or an area, choose a microphone and record. On macOS 27 Golden Gate it also records system audio, and the floating thumbnail lets you trim the clip before it saves.
It is a capture tool, not an editor or a sharing tool. You get a local .mov file, a trim and nothing more: no webcam overlay, no share link and no timeline.
If you need more, use a recorder with a share link such as Loom or Cap for quick messages, a demo-focused Mac recorder such as Screen Studio, or an editor such as Camtasia for edited tutorials. For heavier screenshot work, look at a dedicated tool such as Snagit. QuickTime Player, also built into macOS, adds basic clip editing on top of the same recording tools.
